Contact me

By email

Send an email to andrew.casey@monash.edu if you want to contact me.

My average email response time is one day. My normal working day starts at 0730 and stops when I get tired. I don't respond to emails on weekends or outside of working hours.

If you want to meet with me, send a Google Calendar meeting invitation to the same address after you've read about how I schedule meetings. Otherwise I'm unlikely to accept the invitation!

Scheduling a meeting

You don't need to email me to schedule a meeting. Just send a Google Calendar invite to andrew.casey@monash.edu. That calendar is publicly accessible and is embedded below on this page. It is usually a true reflection of my availability during business hours.

Before proposing a meeting time you should know:

  1. I schedule all my commitments in as few days as possible (ideally one day per week) with no breaks between meetings.
  2. If I have 8 hours of meetings per week then having them scheduled in one day gives me four days of uninterrupted research time, which is critical to my productivity.
  3. When selecting a mutually convenient time, try to select a time that is immediately before or after another meeting already scheduled in my Calendar. This strongly increases the likelihood of me accepting the invitation!
  4. Don't worry about leaving me a 'lunch break' in my Calendar. Schedule the meeting back-to-back with other meetings. I will solve my caloric scheduling.
  5. I prefer efficient 30 minute meetings than inefficient 1 hour meetings. This is an expression rather than a rule. Basically, you should consider how much of my time you need, and schedule for that. Don't default to an hour without thinking first.
  6. Pro-Tip™: In Google Calendar click on Settings and navigate down to Event settings. Set Default guest permissions to 'Modify event'. That means if something changes last minute, or the time you have proposed is not ideal, then I can directly move the meeting time in both of our calendars. Without this setting it means I have to decline the event and create a new event that has all of your notes and location information.

I follow these rules to maintain my own productivity and to ensure that you have my full attention when you're meeting with me, and so that I have uninterrupted research time. That means no drop ins! There are exceptions. If you are having a crisis then I want you to drop in. In those cases you'll have my time and my ear. I'm here to hear and help, but only if you need it. If it helps, I am a LGBTIQ+ Ally and a Mental Health First Aider. Trying to 'drop by for five minutes' means you're interrupting someone else who followed the rules above to find time to meet with me, or you're interrupting my research time that I spend time to structure and protect.
